Ever thought about combining your love for hiking and wine tasting in one epic vacation? A Douro River cruise might just be your perfect match! We were lucky enough to sail with Avalon Waterways on their inaugural cruise down Portugal’s stunning Douro River, and let me tell you, this wasn’t your typical kind of river cruise.
The Douro River, nicknamed the “River of Gold,” winds through some of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes in northern Portugal. There are steep terraced vineyards carved into mountainsides (hello, port wine!), charming villages that look like they’re straight out of a fairy tale, and hiking trails that’ll give you the most Instagram-worthy views you’ve ever seen. Plus, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you know it’s the real deal. If you’re looking for an honest Douro River cruise review that covers both the adventure and luxury sides, you’re in the right place!

Our Floating Home: The Avalon Alegria
We sailed on Avalon’s newest ship, the Alegria (which means “happiness” in Portuguese, cute, right?). What immediately caught my eye were the gorgeous traditional azulejos tiles throughout the ship mixed with modern design. It felt authentically Portuguese without being over-the-top themed.
But here’s what really sold me on this ship for active travelers: the Panorama Suites are genius! Instead of a tiny balcony, you get floor-to-ceiling windows that open completely, essentially turning your entire room into an open-air balcony. More space to enjoy, plus unobstructed views of the passing scenery.
And can we talk about room service breakfast? It’s included with the cruise (score!), so we could fuel up for our adventures without rushing to the dining room. There’s something so luxurious about enjoying fresh pastries and coffee in your pajamas while quaint villages float past your window. Win-win!
Oh, and they have a pool! I’ve been on quite a few river cruises, and this was the first time I’ve seen a pool on a river ship. I totally forgot to pack my bathing suit (face palm), but the Sky Deck was still my favorite spot to go for a quick walk and enjoy the scenery. It’s also where we stood to observe passing through one of Europes tallest river locks.
Day 1: All Aboard in Porto
Our journey started in Porto with checking into our Panorama Suite. We spent so many mornings just watching Portugal drift by while sipping coffee, it was the perfect way to ease into each day. And can we talk about room service breakfast? It’s included with the cruise (score!), so we could fuel up for our adventures without rushing to the dining room. There’s something so luxurious about enjoying fresh pastries and coffee in your pajamas while terraced vineyards float past your window.
As we set sail from Porto on that first afternoon, we grabbed glasses of champagne and headed to the Panorama Lounge (it was drizzling, so we stayed cozy inside) to watch as we sailed under Porto’s famous bridges. The iconic Ponte Luís I, with its dramatic double-deck iron arches, was absolutely stunning from water level. We also passed under the Ponte Maria Pia, designed by Gustave Eiffel before he built his famous tower in Paris. What a way to start the adventure! The terraced vineyards lining the riverbanks told the story of Portugal’s winemaking heritage, while quaint villages offered glimpses into traditional Portuguese life. It was the perfect introduction to what would be an amazing week of adventures!
Day 2: Guimarães, Walking Through Portuguese History
Our first real adventure took us to Guimarães, known as the birthplace of Portugal. After a walking tour through the medieval city center (wear good shoes, those cobblestones are no joke!), we visited Pousada Santa Marinha da Costa.
This place completely blew me away. It’s a former 12th-century monastery turned luxury hotel, perched in the hills with killer views of the city below. The walk through this monastery was totally worth it, with gorgeous cloisters, lush gardens, and that incredible tiled staircase that’s basically begging for photos. We ended with a port tasting, because honestly, what’s a day in Portugal without port?
Day 3: Hiking the Terraced Vineyards (The Real MVP Day!)
Okay, this was hands down the highlight of our trip. We did a guided hike through the Douro Valley’s famous terraced vineyards above Pinhão village. Let me be real with you, this isn’t a casual stroll. You’re climbing steep terrain that’s been carved into mountainsides for centuries.
Mother Nature decided to add a little extra adventure with some rainy weather. But honestly? It didn’t dampen our experience one bit. This is where packing like a true adventurer paid off. Our hiking boots and rain coats kept us comfortable and ready to explore. If anything, the misty atmosphere made the terraced landscapes look even more dramatic and mystical, and we were even more grateful when the sun appeared mid-way through out hike.
But wow, the payoff! We walked through citrus groves (honestly I’ve never seen oranges quite like this, even living in Florida), towering cypress trees, and purple wisteria cascading down the terraces. The views over the Douro River were absolutely spectacular, rain or shine. Our guide shared stories about how these terraces were built by hand over generations. The human engineering is mind-blowing!
After working up an appetite, we headed to Quinta do Bomfim for port tastings and lunch at BomFim 1896. The meal was designed by Michelin-starred chef Pedro Lemos, and honestly, after that hike, everything tasted even more amazing. (Pro tip: pack lightweight hiking shoes with good grip, the terraced paths can be steep and uneven, but trust me, the views are worth every step.)
Day 4: Porto Adventures (Choose Your Own Adventure Style)
This day was perfect because Pete and I could pick different activities based on what we were feeling. He went cycling with a professional biologist guide along Porto’s coastal routes, exploring wharfs, beaches, and getting educated about maritime ecosystems while getting his heart rate up.
I went the wine route (shocking, I know) and explored the WOW cultural district in Vila Nova de Gaia. The name says it all, this place has a “wow” view of Porto! After coffee and photos, I visited the Cork Museum (way more interesting than it sounds), then finished at Fonseca’s centuries-old cellars for the most dramatic port tasting ever. They literally opened a vintage bottle with fire, so extra, so cool.
Fun fact I learned at the Cork Museum: Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork! And here’s the cool connection, those cork stoppers aren’t just for show. Cork is actually perfect for wine aging because it’s naturally antimicrobial and allows just the right amount of oxygen to interact with the wine. So basically, Portugal’s cork forests are as essential to the wine industry as the grapes themselves. Neat, right?
Because there’s SO much to see in Porto, I’d definitely recommend adding a few extra days either before or after your cruise. Portugal’s second-largest city deserves more than a day trip!
Life Aboard the Alegria
The ship itself was such a delight to come back to each evening. The Sky Deck had tons of seating for watching the scenery roll by. And I really enjoyed being able to walk off the ship in some smaller ports and just go for a scenic stroll. One of my favorite moments, though, was watching the chef’s pastry demonstration where he shared his grandmother’s almond tart recipe, the whole ship smelled like sweet tradition.
We also navigated through the Carrapatelo Dam, Europe’s deepest lock system. It sounds nerdy, but watching this massive engineering feat in action was pretty incredible and totally unique to Douro River cruising.
I was really impressed with their sustainability focus too. No single-use plastics anywhere, and they had water refill stations with vitamin-infused options (ginger-lime was my jam). The Club Lounge at the back of the ship became our regular hangout spot for coffee and treats while watching Portugal drift by.
The Food Situation (Because We Can’t Not Talk About It)
Let’s be honest, Portuguese food is incredible, and the ship’s chefs totally delivered. They incorporated local flavors and sourced ingredients from markets along our route. One night we’d have traditional Portuguese dishes, the next night it was contemporary takes on regional favorites.
The best part? After a morning of hiking through vineyards or exploring historic cities, you could indulge guilt-free knowing you’d be walking it off the next day. And if you overdid it (hello, Portuguese pastéis de nata addiction), there were plenty of lighter options to balance things out.
Quick Tips If You Go
- Pack smart: Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable, plus lightweight hiking footwear for the vineyard treks. Layers are your friend, Portuguese weather can be unpredictable.
- Best timing: Spring and fall are perfect for active excursions. Spring brings wildflowers to the terraces, fall brings harvest energy. Summer can be pretty hot for hiking.
- Book active excursions early: The vineyard hikes and cycling tours can fill up fast, so if you have your heart set on getting active, book before you sail.
- Fitness reality check: The terraced vineyard hikes require moderate fitness, you’ll be navigating steep, uneven terrain. But there are gentler walking options in the cities for recovery days.
- Leave suitcase room: You’ll want to bring home port wine, local crafts, and maybe some of those gorgeous Portuguese tiles. Pack a foldable duffle for the trip home!
